An Excellent Sim Rig – TRAK RACER TR120 Long Term Review

Today we’re going to be taking a look at the TRAK RACER TR120 racing simulator, including, the build process, the rig configuration options and the long term use review. I’ve been using this sim rig now for over 6 months and it not only looks good, it’s been super solid and perfect for quick hot laps, rally, drifting, online races and testing out new hardware.

Trak Racer TR120 sim rigs are extremely strong, adjustable, and there is huge range of accessories for customization. Which allow for endless possibilities to configure and dial in the perfect setup. The good thing about aluminum profile rigs is that they can be configured and customized as your needs change.

TR120 Unboxing and Assembly

Opening the boxes we can find a card that has a QR code link to download the build manual, you may want to print off a paper copy of the manual if you prefer, but I found referencing the manual on the screen of a device worked well for the build.

All the parts and the aluminum extrusion come well packaged, the first thing to notice is the high quality of the parts and hardware, all the metal parts well-made and feel solid. With High quality parts and hardware, the thicker walled aluminum profile and the Heavy duty brackets all add up to ensure a solid built rig.

By following the manual the assembly is fairly straight forward, it starts with building the base working around the frame and installing corner brackets and bolting parts together.

Profiles are joined together by either installing the ball spring T-nuts or bolting the aluminum profile with the corner braces, or on the base by bolting parts directly into the ends of the threaded profile.

Seat Slider

The TR120 comes included with a seat slider, this is handy for quickly adjusting the seating position or moving the seat back to make it easier to jump in and out of the rig. I was thinking to remove the sliders once it was built up and the driving position was set, but it’s been essential for guest and friends, allowing us to quickly adjust the seating position to start racing.

For the cable management the TR120 comes with handy twist in clips that work well with cable ties. At the moment I’m using some reusable zip ties which makes it easy to swap out cabling for testing different sim gear.

Once it’s built up it’s a heavy rig, so you will need two people to help move into position. Or if you prefer Trak Racer does offers optional add-on caster wheels, which would make moving the rig around easier.

Configurations

The TR120 has quite a few configuration options to choose from, which allows you to configure it to meet your needs for the hardware used. There’s heaps of add-ons like handbrake mounts, an adjustable keyboard tray, PC tray, castor wheel, speaker mounts and butt kicker mounts, all items that allow you to further customize your setup. Or you can even build and setup the TR120 rig as a Flight sim

Wheel Base Mount

Starting with the wheel mount, there’s the universal wheel mount which is a flat pre-drilled plate, this allows for easy mounting of wheel bases and offers the best leg room if you’re not front or side mounting a wheel base. The next choice is the TR-one, this has 2 aluminum profiles with anodized side angle adjustments plates and it comes with an adjustable steel center wheel plate that can be mounted in a variety of ways for different wheel bases. For other brand wheel bases there’s also a front mount and a Fanatec Side mount option to choose from.

Currently I’m using the TR-One center mount inverted with the Moza R12 direct drive base and while the R12 doesn’t have side mounting points on the wheel base, inverting the mount and bolting it up from the underside gives a clean side mounted look. One thing I did add after the initial setup was some spacers under the wheel base just to lift it up slightly. Other than that I’ve been really happy with the TR-One setup and adjustability, it’s worked well with all wheel bases, giving a good driving position and providing plenty of rigidity.

Pedal Mount

For mounting the pedals there’s 3 options to choose from, there’s a pre-drilled plate, the aluminum profile with a heel plate and the inverted kit. The pre-dilled plate is good for mounting all types of pedals, and it makes mounting a basic set of Logitech Pedals from the underside easy. I’m using the second option, which is the aluminum profile with the heel plate and find it works well with different pedals. I’ve used it configure with a pedal sets with and without the included heel plate and it’s been super solid and given plenty of adjustability. Pedals can also be mounted individually to the profile if needed.

Shifter Mount

For the shifter mount there’s a short arm or long arm mount, I’ve been using the long arm mount and think this one is the best choice for shifter placement and rigidity. At the moment I’ve got a sequential shifter mounted onto the shifter plate and a handbrake directly mounted onto the profile. But might add the handbrake mount and relocate the handbrake to the outer side of the shifter.

Seat

Next up for the seats Trak racer offers a few fixed back and reclining seat options to choose from or you can always use your own. I’m using the Sparco Circuit, now theses seat are made for race cars and do hold you in tightly with a fixed back position, the seats attaches via brackets with side mounting points which give some angle adjustment and these seat rails mount directly onto to the included seat sliders.

Monitor Stand

Now for a monitor stand there’s the options to have an integrated mount that attaches onto the sim-rig, for a single, dual, triple or even a quad monitor mount setup. Having an integrated mount does look good, but I do prefer having the monitor mount separate from the rig, this allows it to be easily moved and it also keeps any vibration from the rig traveling up to the screen. Separate free standing monitors are easy to move around, which is good for maintenance and adjustment and also accessing the back of the rig.

One other accessory I did add was the USB powered RGB mat, The Sim Mat is made of neoprene and this defines an area for the rig to sit on and keeps everything looking neat and tidy. When the power is on the outer edge lights up and this can be cycled through different colors and RGB modes.

TR120 Final Thoughts

A big benefit of building a setup with an aluminum profile rig is that it’s strong and versatile. You can always add parts separately later if you wish to customize it further and its easy to swap out parts. So always start off with a good quality base and build upon it as your needs grow or change.

Driving and racing the solid setup makes you feel connected with the game, you don’t have the worry of pedals moving or sliding around under your desk and it gives better control over the car you’re driving. If your been racing at a desk for a while with a beginner setup and looking to upgrade to a direct drive, a solid aluminum profile rig is the way to go. Not only is it solid and versatile allowing you to setup a perfect driving position it will make the immersion and racing more enjoyable.

Overall I’m very happy with the design and build quality of the TR120 rig, its exceed expectations and it will definitely outlast all the electronic components attached. The adjustability also has been great for testing new equipment and it’s handled everything thrown at it. The Trak Racer TR120 is a buy once item, built to last a very long time.
